Weiss/Manfredi’s Women In Military Service For America Memorial was the winning design in a 1989 national design competition serves as a national place of acknowledgement and honor for all the military servicewomen of the United States, both alive and dead. Located just outside of the nation’s capital, the memorial was built in the excavated space behind an existing hemicycle, or half-circle monument, which was built in 1932. The addition includes etched skylights, bearing quotations by or relating to the American servicewomen commemorated inside the building, which cast shadows of the words onto the concrete walls in the interior below.
Almost disguised by the historical exterior, the simple glass, rough concrete, steel, and wood interior opens to an indoor promenade with honors over 2.5 million women, and the register continues to grow as family members add names, from the past and present, to the register.
